The process begins with a Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA). The practitioner observes the participant in different settings, interviews family members, carers, and support workers, and reviews existing documentation such as medical, psychological, or support plan records. The FBA identifies the functions of behaviours of concern: what triggers them, what the person is communicating through the behaviour, and what environmental or social factors contribute.

Based on the FBA, the practitioner develops a Behaviour Support Plan (BSP). The BSP outlines preventive strategies (changes to the environment or routines that reduce triggers), teaching strategies (skills the person can learn as alternatives to the behaviour), and reactive strategies (how the team should respond when the behaviour occurs). The plan should be written in plain language and be understandable to all who need to implement it.

Once the plan is in place, the practitioner provides training to support workers and family members.
